PavlovichThe analysis of modern literature on gossypiboma (retained in cavities or tissues surgical dressing gauze) has been successfully conducted. There were reviewed incidence, pathology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of gossypiboma. A special attention was paid at medico-legal aspects of this iatrogenic complication and prophylaxis measures. Gossypiboma must always be included in differential diagnosis in patients with unusual abdominal symptoms after previous surgery. Cases of gossypiboma are classical examples of iatrogenic lesions and point on a deviation from standard medical care or malpractice. |
